Focus on Elix-IR, the next generation threat warning system

Using innovative techniques and infrared technology, Elix-IR is able to instantly identify and locate threats, ranging from missiles to gunfire. The system also has the ability to provide sensor imagery to aid low visibility flying and brownout landing. Elix-IR will continue to adapt through a stream of software upgrade packages to meet the customers changing needs.

It is expected that Elix-IR, along with other products such as MIRAS, a threat warner for fast-jets, Vicon 78, a counter-measure dispenser system, and Imagery on Demand toolsets will constitute the basic components of a future Thales Defensive Aids Suite solution, offering an unrivalled capability for the protection and sustained operation of modern air platforms.

I really wonder when it will become operational...

The 31 million euro ($45 million) demonstrator, dubbed Mastrid (Multicontext Airborne System for Targeting, Recognition and IDentification), will be derived from the existing Damocles pod and will feature an improved daylight camera and enhanced target detection/identification algorithms as well as a new geolocation function. It may ultimately serve to develop an all-weather detection/identification capability, according to French armaments agency DGA.

Mastrid will be used to base development of a second-generation Damocles XF pod to be introduced on air force and navy Rafale and Mirage fighters. Delivery of Damocles XF, first unveiled in May by the pod’s manufacturer, Thales, will start in 2014.

In all, the French government is supplying 2.4 billion euros from its national stimulus plan to accelerate and expand urgent weapon system procurement.
