I remember reading in a french magasine that during the visit of Gripens in a french AdlA base (with Mirage F1 IIRC), the Gripen also had the opportunity to be confronted to the Rafale. Does anyone have more info on this meeting?
The flight perfomance of the rafale at hight altitude , hight speed are also much better than the gripen .
There is also a generation gap(in favor of the rafale) between the rafale and gripen weapon system . The one in the gripen is much closer to the one on the mirage 2000-5mk2/9 than the one on the rafale as well at flight perfomance .
I was thinking that the Gripen was more in the league of the 2000-5 than in the Rafale. Only with the Gripen NG will it come closer to the other eurocanards if you ask me.

That what I said . A rafale pilot said that the gripen (C/D version ) was a small mirage 2000-5MK2 and that the rafale weapon system was much better as well as flight perfomance .
In an article of Air Fan of May 2007, Gripen came to France in exchange with F1CR Reims. Beyond reconnaissance missions, the Gripen have mock dogfights and BVR with the Mirages F1. I did not specify the outcome, nobody doubts ... [28]
however, the Gripen has been against the Rafale, and here it seems that our Swedish friends had nice cold sweat ...
Thus combined raids were conducted according to Air Fan (two or four in F1CR reco Gripen escorted by two plus two Rafales sweep in with the AWACS, with four in 2000-5 CAP) and interceptions Gripen / Rafale in altitude. Swedish aviators knew little french new jet they fear above all the ability to shoot long distance with the Mica IR. Swedish aviators "who have participated with Rafale in combat have also discovered huge reserves of power available to that aircraft, even heavily loaded"
Also, according to a pilot, 1 / 33, connoisseur of the Rafale, which flew aboard Rafale and Gripen. "Gripen is about the capacity of 2000-5 Mk2, a little smaller. But in terms of fusion of information, payload capacity, and technology of the weapon system, there 'is a gap between the Rafale and JAS39 "
Other comments: "Visiting the EC 1 / 7, the Swedish pilots were obviously surprised by the capabilities of carrying the Rafale and the fusion of diffferent sensors "
... against F1CR , I do prefer not to comment ... we will simply say that for dogfightieng, they are dropped completely, and BVR
I was thinking that the Gripen was more in the league of the 2000-5 than in the Rafale. Only with the Gripen NG will it come closer to the other eurocanards if you ask me.

A few years ago, SWAF made an interesting comparison among JAS-39A, F-16C/D Block40/42, F/A-18C/D, and M2000-5:
Gripen's acceleration in sub-sonic and trans-sonic domains: faster than F/A-18C/D and M2000-5, but slower than F-16C. Gripen's instaneous turn rate: significantly better than F-16C, F/A-18C/D, and M2000-5. Gripenss sustaneous turn rate: worse than F-16C, F/A-18C/D, but better than M2000-5. The Gripen achieved the AoA of more than 100 degrees during the flight test, but due to the reason for flight safety, the normal setting of the upper limit of the AoA for the Gripen?s FCS is 50 degrees now. Gripen's frontal RCS: about 1/5 of F/A-18C/D's, 1/3 of F-16C/D Block40/42's, and 1/2 of Mirage-2000-5's. Detective range of PS-05A radar (JAS-39): a little shorter than AN/APG-65/73 (F/A-18C/D), but 20% longer than RDY (M2000-5), and 40% longer than the AN/APG-68 for F-16C/D Block40/42. While combating with the basic type of MIG-29 (MIG-29G??) in BVR engagement: JAS-39A: the effective range for Gripen to detect MIG-29 is 60 km longer than the effective range for MIG-29 to detect Gripen. M2000-5: the effective range for Mirage to detect MIG-29 is 32 km longer than the effective range for MIG-29 to detect Mirage. F/A-18C/D: the effective range for Hornet to detect MIG-29 is 25 km longer than the effective range for MIG-29 to detect Hornet. F-16C/D: the effective range for Falcon to detect MIG-29 is 5 km longer than the effective range for MIG-29 to detect Falcon. Maintenance of GRIPEN: The MTBF for JAS-39A is 7.6 flight hours, and the SAAB declared that the MTBF for the USAF?s frontline fighters (except F/A-22 perhaps) is no more than 4.1 flight hours. The man hours of maintenance for each flight-hour: 12 man-hours initially, than reduced to 10 man-hours (F/A-18 E/F: 15 man hours of maintenance for each flight-hour). The charge for each flight-hour: 2,500 USD initially, than reduced to 2,000 USD.

You're absolutely right. As I'm not a Gripen pilot myself (although I have good contacts), I can not guarantee my information to be correct. But as everyone I have spoken pretty much tells the same story, the Gripen has proven to be completely superior in BVR and WVR fights against F-15's, F-16's and F-18's. What's interesting is that the pilots claim the Mirage 2000 to be tougher to beat in WVR than any of the teen's.
So, if the Rafale is superior to Mirage, the Gripen C/D will probably have some (minor?) issues with the Rafale. OTOH the Gripen C/D has shot down the Typhoon, which is rumored to be a quite tought opponent to the mighty Rafale:
“Our weapons and tactics were limited by Red Force rules, and in an exercise like this the Red Force is always supposed to die, but even without our AMRAAMs and data links we got eight or 10 kills, including a Typhoon.
So beware Rafale, when the Gripen NG is flying... it will be small, and deadly, with reduced RCS, AESA, improved MMI, IRST, IRIS-T and Meteor.... But for now, the Rafale is probably a quite tough opponent to the Gripen. I think even the Gripen fanboys may agree to that
