Some rumours are emerging from the Swiss that the decision might be delayed to 2015 and that new aircraft won't be purchased before 2020 at all and would than replace the F/A-18 as well.
Emmen, 18 March 2010 RUAG wins order for state-of-the-art European aircraft radar
Thales has awarded RUAG Aviation an order worth 5.5 million Swiss francs to produce a subassembly for the RBE2 radar for France's Rafale fighter jet. The radar is the most powerful currently used in European fighter jets. The first deliveries are planned for the second half of 2011 and will initially be integrated into the Rafale for the French market, with export customers following at a later date. These will include the Swiss Air Force, should Switzerland choose the Rafale.
RUAG and Thales collaborate in various aerospace, defence and security projects. RUAG is strengthening its position at Thales' side in the latest generation of the RBE2 radar, thus taking a decisive step in a strategic partnership based on a cooperation agreement signed between the two companies in May 2009. This partnership is founded on excellent industrial and technical performance and strong competitiveness, and will enable the RUAG Group to participate in the current and future success of the Rafale in France and in the export market.
"We are thrilled about winning the order. It is proof of our outstanding technological expertise," stated Dr Peter Guggenbach, CEO of RUAG Aviation.
The RBE2 radar (Radar à Balayage Electronique 2 plans) developed and produced by Thales has an antenna that performs active electronic scanning in two planes. This new technology gives the Rafale a decisive advantage in terms of radar operating efficiency and reliability compared to its European competitors, which have older generation radars that employ mechanical scanning.
The highly complex wired back structures that will be supplied by RUAG link the individual radar modules together and connect the radar to the airframe.
The series production order follows an initial order for developing the aforementioned structure in March 2008, which led to successful implementation and validation of three prototypes in September 2009.

Hi everybody. Let me introduce my self. I am Chris and a new member in the forum. I am a strong supporter of the Rafale in the Hellenic contest for a new fighter aircraft. According to some post in greek forums there a rumors that the prime minister Papandreou has decided to order 30 Rafale fighters from France!! Dassault offered to exchange the mirage 2000 fighters for new Rafale figters (1 Rafale for every 4 mirage 2000). I do not think that we (hellenic side) are the first to sign the official contract even though the Hellenic air force needs the new aircrafts to replace the aging A7 and F4 s. France and Greece have strong ties and this buy will make them further strong. Do not forget that this buy will be just the beginning with at least 90 aircraft following in the next decade. Has anybody heard or read anything?

Hi Chris.
Given the state of the Greek finance I don't know how Greece could afford 30 Rafales unless they manage to find someone who would take the Mirage 2000 for a very good price.
Personally I really like the HAF and would just love to see Rafales in Aegean ghost camo! Those could turn out to be the sexiest Rafales out there.

Hallo Nick, it is true that the state of the greek economy is not good at the moment but the purchase of a new aircraft fighter is already been agreed exactly like the purchase of the 6 Fremm Frigates for the navy. There are other programs like the new training aircraft, areal tanker and many other projects which have been cancelled due to budget cutbacks. Perhaps the contract could be postponed for 1 max 2 years but not longer due to the fact that the TuAF will receive its first JSF s in 2015. I hope i can see in the future french and hellenic Rafales training together. Chris

In a new report submitted in June the Federal Council, the Head of the Department of Defense propose the purchase of a first tranche of a dozen aircraft [...] The gradual renewal of the Swiss fleet would automatically exclude a new assessment, so a U.S. offer. [...] "With this installment purchase program, the Swedish Gripen is the one which offers the lowest long-term guarantees," said one aviation expert by emphasizing its less advanced technology. What strongly deny the Swedes. They ensure that their country has opted for the Gripen as the main component of its air force, so the future is assured. Furthermore, Switzerland would have access to technologies of the new generation that had not been submitted in April 2009
In any case, the final answer will come off only after the political return in September or October. [...]
Leuthard even spoke, last winter, about "an economic recovery plan" with this acquisition. Ueli Maurer, who met with the Defence Ministers of the three countries in line to provide future aircraft, was impressed by the possibilities of acquiring new technologies. We know that the Swiss Air Force, at least the pilots, bend to the Dassault Rafale, which, besides the possibility to use French airspace, promises to associate the Swiss to future developments.
